The Tripoli based Libyan government’s Media Page announced last Friday (19 September) that work is continuing laying the first asphalt layer of the main runway at Tripoli International Airport.
The under construction Tripoli International Airport is located about 21 km south of Tripoli. It was destroyed during Tripoli’s militia wars in July/August 2014.
The runway has a total length of 2,880 meters and a width of 45 meters. The laying of the main runway comes in preparation for the airport’s long-awaited opening.
Currently Tripoli is using its only functioning and much smaller airport, Mitiga airport (formerly the US Wheelus Airbase), located about 10 km east of the centre of the city.
End of Italy’s AENEAS as TIA contractor
It will be recalled that the Italian Aeneas Consortium had been building Tripoli International Airport up to September / October 2024. It had been awarded the contract for the renovation of Tripoli International Airport in 2017.
However, the failure by Libya to keep up payments to the consortium caused the construction to stall at the end of 2024 and the implementation of the project was transferred to another contractor.
