The first direct commercial scheduled flight between Libya and Italy arrived today at Tripoli’s Mitiga airport after a break of more than 10 years.
Several Italian civil aviation officials arrived on board the flight, marking the resumption of flights by the Italian airline ITA Airways from Rome Fiumicino Airport. Medsky operates a chartered flight between Tripoli and Rome.
According to Italian civil aviation officials, ITA Airways will soon operate direct commercial flights between Italian airports Misrata and Benghazi.
During the official reception celebration of the flight, Transport Minister Mohamed Al-Shahoubi expressed readiness to grant ITA additional transport rights to link Libyan airports with other destinations in the European Union countries.
The flight comes within the framework of the efforts of the Tripoli based Libyan government to lift the European ban on Libyan registered craft into the EU.
Transport Minister Mohamed Al-Shahoubi said the flight supports and confirms the safety and security of Libyan airspace, the eligibility of Libyan airports to receive international air traffic and secure its requirements in accordance with international standards. He said he looked forward to Moroccan, Qatari and Saudi flights arriving in the first half of 2025.
