Libya’s Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA) reported yesterday that a decision will be made ‘‘soon’’ regarding the resumption of ITA Airways flights to Mitiga Airport.
The statement was made following an ongoing visit by a delegation from Lufthansa and ITA Airways to the LCAA yesterday.
This followed a first inspection visit by the delegation to Mitiga Airport last Monday (27 July).
The LCAA had said that the Mitiga visit was to evaluate the security measures at the airport and the extent of compliance with the international standards and rules adopted in the field of civil aviation security.
The LCAA reported that, as part of the joint assessment mission conducted by the German airline Lufthansa and the Italian airline ITA regarding civil aviation security measures, the team visited the Civil Aviation Authority headquarters on the morning of Tuesday, July 28.
There, they reviewed the use of a digital transformation system designed to support compliance with the international regulations and standards governing civil aviation security.
The team’s spokesperson, the LCAA said, expressed admiration for the system's advanced technical capabilities and its vital role in enabling security specialists to operate using state-of-the-art technology.
Positive preliminary assessment of Mitiga Airport
The spokesperson, it added, also noted the positive preliminary assessment following the first round of inspections at Mitiga Airport yesterday.
Second phase of Mitiga inspection
The LCAA said that second phase of the mission at Mitiga Airport is scheduled to begin this (Tuesday) afternoon.
It concluded that based on the assessment findings and the resulting recommendations, a decision will soon be made regarding the resumption of ITA flights to Mitiga Airport.
EASA extends Libya flight ban until January 2027
It will be recalled that the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) announced last Friday (24 July) the extension of its flight ban over Libya until January 2027.
