The third edition of the Libya Aviation Forum and Expo will be held 5 – 7 November 2024

The third edition of the Libya Aviation Forum and Expo will be held from the 5 – 7 November 2024 in Tripoli, Adel Ben El Haj, Project Manager for organisers Hormuz Tours and Events, told Libya Herald.

Bel Haj looked back on the 2023 edition, progress in Libya’s aviation sector since then, and looked forward to what is needed and expected in 2024 and in the 2024 edition of the forum.

Despite all the raised expectations in 2023, the 2024 edition of the forum is still vital and alive, he added.

Lifting the EU flight ban
The event will no doubt discuss the perennial topic of when will the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) conduct its final audit of Libya’s international airports to give the green light for the EU to lift its flight ban on Libya. The ICAO was expected to take place sometime this summer.

The final ICAO audit
Four major airports were expected to be audited by the ICAO in 2024. These will be Tripoli’s Mitiga, Misrata airport, Benghazi’s Benina airport and Tripoli International Airport – when its construction is completed.

Tripoli International Airport and Aeneas
Sometime this summer the construction of Tripoli International Airport was also supposed to be completed by the Italian consortium Aeneas. However, delays in payment tranches by the Libyan government have delayed the project to at best the end of 2024, sources have informed Libya Herald.

Audits by individual airliners
Audits, visits and MoU have been signed by various airlines including Qatar Air, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, Saudi and Turkish airlines since the second edition of the Libya Aviation Forum and Expo, but none have commenced flights yet.

A success: MedSky flights to Rome
The only notable success since 2023 has been the direct Tripoli to Rome (charter) flights by MedSky. These were launched on 30 September with 3 direct flights per week in both directions.

This year’s event seeks to progress the sector based on the 2023 debates
Reviewing all of the above, Adel Ben El Haj, Project Manager for organisers Hormuz Tours and Events said the 2024 Libya Aviation Forum and Expo will build on where discussions left off at last year’s event.

He said this year’s event is indeed very critical and rich in vital issues to be debated – most importantly encouraging new direct flights to major European and Arab capitals and lifting the EU flight ban.

Adel Ben El Haj said local and international participants and speakers will have real contributions to make to the topic of the hour: the lifting on the EU flight ban and the reinstating of Libya’s aviation sector.
