Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister, Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, directed the need to intensify efforts to complete Tripoli International Airport’s new terminal before the end of this year.
This includes carrying out the accompanying work of maintaining the runway, lighting and the necessary radars, issuing instructions to the Transportation Projects Implementation Authority to immediately start maintaining Tripoli International Airport airstrip in accordance with the approved international specifications.
The news came out of a meeting on held yesterday with his Minister of Transport, Mohammed Al-Shahoubi, the head of the Civil Aviation Authority, the Director of the Transport Projects Implementation Authority, the Director of the Airports Authority, and a number of directors of departments in the Transport Ministry.
The meeting was held to follow up on the civil aviation plan to develop the air navigation system and the efforts made, including opening new aviation destinations, and activating work at local airports to operate domestic flights to facilitate the movement of citizens.
The meeting also discussed the progress of work in the implementation of the new Tripoli International Airport terminal, the implementation schedule and the difficulties facing the project.
Tripoli International Airport is located some 20-odd kms south of Tripoli and was destroyed by the militia war of 2014. Tripoli now has only one functioning airport: Mitiga airport on the edge of central Tripoli in Tajura.
The new Tripoli International Airport terminal is being constructed by Italian consortium Aeneas. Sources had informed Libya Herald that failure to make prompt payments to Aeneas are the reasons for the delay in implementation.
