Libya’s Tripoli based Airports Authority reported yesterday that a test flight was conducted at Tripoli International Airport (runway 360-180) yesterday – the first for nearly 10 years.

Confirming the Libyan Express flight using a Beechcroft King Air 200 craft, the Director General of Tripoli International Airport, Mohamed Abdel Gader, said that the navigation tower had been provided and tested, as well as the control tower.

He said the airport had been secured internally and externally and that flights would resume partially at Tripoli International Airport to support Mitiga Airport in operating some flights.

He added that companies are continuing to work to complete the rest of the airport in the best possible way, such as establishing the passenger hall and maintaining the runway and towers. He did not specify which companies.

The AENEAS contract?
It will be recalled that Italian consortium, AENEAS, is constructing the new Tripoli International Airport. However, unconfirmed news on Libyan news sites report that the contract may be re-awarded to other companies due to a breakdown in relations between AENEAS and the Tripoli Libyan government.

On 11 October Italian media reported Elio Franci, the head of Aeneas complained that Libya is blocking payments for the Tripoli International Airport construction project.

Franci hoped the presence of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Italian Libyan Business forum to be held in Tripoli on 29 October would help in resolving the issue.

Franci said AENEAS had completed more than 50 percent of the supplies and installations by the summer of this year.
