The Minister of Economy and Trade, Mohamed Al-Hwej, accompanied by the Minister of Labour and Rehabilitation, Ali Al-Abed, held an expanded meeting yesterday at the Ministry’s Tripoli headquarters.
The meeting included the Undersecretary for Commercial Affairs, the Minister’s Advisor, the President of the General Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, representatives of the Internal Security Service, the heads of the Chambers of Commerce, and the Director General of the Libyan Business Council (LBC) and several business owners.
The meeting was devoted to discussing:
- The file of regulating expatriate workers in the local market, the mechanism for implementing the Labor Relations Law and its executive regulations.
- Coordinating with the regulatory authorities to implement the Minister of Economy and Trade’s Resolution No. 508 of 2023 regarding the report on the provisions of the legislation regulating commercial activity prohibiting the practice of all retail or wholesale commercial activities other than Libyans.
- Business owners also discussed the difficulties and obstacles facing the supply of goods through banking operations and the measures taken regarding organizing supply operations.
The attendees called on the Minister of Economy and Trade to support the private sector and work to communicate with the Central Bank of Libya to facilitate the process of opening all bank transfers and finding other tools for the benefit of company owners and merchants. This, they said, contributes to the continuity of supply operations and the flow of goods in the local market.
Judicial police to monitor expat workers engaged illegally in trade
The Minister of Economy and Trade stressed the importance of activating the role of judicial police officers in the local market, organizing expatriate workers, and following up on their activity in the professions they are authorized to practice in accordance with applicable legislation and laws.
Joint team formed to regulate expat workers
The meeting concluded with the formation of a team that includes the Ministries of Economy, Trade and Labour, the regulatory and regulatory agencies, and relevant institutions, which is responsible for developing and implementing a mechanism for regulating expatriate workers and following up on their conditions in the local market.
