In an exclusive interview with Libya Herald, the Director of the Media Office of the Department of Support and Development of Medical Services (DSDMS), Nassim Nael, said that the American team affiliated with the American Novick Cardiac Alliance began a workshop at the Benghazi Medical Centre on performing surgical operations on children and newborns.

He said the team began performing the first surgical operation on a child of 6 years old suffering from a hole in the wall of the ventricles.

Nael confirmed that the workshop will continue until the end of January, and the team will aim to perform 40 operations at a rate of 3 operations per day, in the presence of several Libyan doctors to train and qualify them to perform delicate operations related to children’s heart defects.

Nael pointed out that this practical workshop comes within the ongoing cooperation between the DSDMA and international therapeutic centres, organizations and associations, and within the efforts to localise treatment within Libya and train and qualify local medical personnel.
