Tripoli, 27 January 2016:

Algeria is cutting all air links with Libya until further notice.

The ban which . . .[restrict]starts on Friday will only affect Libyan Airlines, the sole carrier between the two countries, which has operated three flights a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Tomorrow will therefore see the last return service between Tripoli’s Mitiga to Houari Boumedienne Airport in Algiers.

The Algerian Civil Aviation Authority gave no specific reason for the ban. However, it noted that Libya was gripped by violent militia fighting, had three governments and this chaos had allowed IS jihadists to set up in the country to the great disquiet of neighbours such as Algeria and Tunisia.

The announcement follows the visit to Algiers by prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj.  It is not known if the two are connected.

Responding to the decision, Libyan Airlines has told Libyans in Algiers who may be affected by it to contact its office at the airport and it will organise alternative flights back to Tripoli.
