A private passenger plane has crashed, overrunning the runway at Misrata Airport, while attempting an emergency landing this morning. The plane caught fire.
Early unconfirmed reports say the plane had an engine issue while others say the pilot landed from the wrong direction.
Circulating photos and videos show fire crews dousing the extinguished fire.
The plane is reported to be a Turkish registered Cessna Citation Latitude 68A registration letters TC-AKF.
It is reportedly operated by Istanbul-based Turkish private jet charter and aviation services company BKN JET (Bikini Jet).
The plane is believed to have been empty with only the three-person crew on board.
These are the pilot, the co-pilot and the flight attendant - all reported as Turkish nationals.
The Tripoli Transport Ministry said the crew members received treatment, and available information indicates that their health condition is good.
The plane, arriving from Turkey, was scheduled to transport three Libyan political figures to Turkey. These included Mohamed Zoubi, the brother of the Tripoli based Undersecretary of Defence, Abdelsalam Zoubi.
The Transport Ministry has confirmed that no fatalities have been reported. It said measures are being taken to reopen the airport.
