Libya’s state National Oil Corporation (NOC) reported yesterday that its subsidiary, Sirte Oil Company, has begun integrating SLB’s (Schlumberger) artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into its field exploration operations.

It reported that over the previous two days, the company executed its first directional drilling operation in the Al-Khair field using an AI application, marking a significant milestone in the global energy sector.

The NOC reported that this is the first such operation in Libya and the second globally. This achievement represents one of the world’s first and most advanced applications of AI-powered autonomous well guidance and placement, achieved through the integration of advanced digital solutions from SLB.

Using this technology, the NOC said the company witnessed a significant transformation in drilling performance. The rate of penetration (ROP) doubled in the same field, and the horizontal section of the well was autonomously guided and precisely positioned within the reservoir boundaries, with real-time adjustments made without any manual intervention.

Furthermore, all petrophysical records were automatically analyzed by the automated reservoir advisor (SSA) engine, enabling a comprehensive and immediate interpretation of reservoir data. This advanced geological assessment extended to complete wellbore control, resulting in fully automated drilling of the horizontal section. The unique integration of the Reservoir Advisor (SSA) and the Driveline Drilling Advisor (DDA) enabled the activation of Neuro ADD (Automatic Driveline Drilling) and Neuro AGS (Automatic Geological Guidance) solutions, ensuring precise well positioning within the target reservoir along the horizontal section.

The 1,800-foot horizontal drain section was drilled using these smart technologies, doubling the penetration rate while maintaining drilling within the optimal producing formation (sweet spot).

Tests yielded a daily production rate of 1,060 barrels per day using a 64/28-inch submersible pump through a choke.

The NOC added that these results align with the National Oil Corporation’s vision to enhance production rates and improve operational efficiency, and reflect Sirte Oil Company’s commitment to innovation and supporting the oil sector’s vision for increased production.

This historic achievement, the NOC continued, underscores the company’s leadership in adopting advanced technologies, highlights the exceptional capabilities of its national technical staff, and reinforces Libya’s position as a leading nation in AI-powered energy solutions.

The NOC said Sirte Oil Company is committed to maintaining this momentum, enhancing operational excellence, and solidifying its position among global industry leaders, setting a new benchmark for operational efficiency and safety in the region.
