According to a report by the Tripoli based Libyan government last Saturday (25 October), the Chinese Chargé d’affaires, Liu Jian, confirmed that he will officially begin work at the Chinese embassy in Tripoli starting in mid-November. This is with the aim of developing bilateral relations and supporting joint projects with Libya.
The revelation came during a meeting between Abdul Majeed Mlegta, Chairman of the Libyan Chinese High Committee for Cooperation and Liu Jian held last Friday in Tunis.
The meeting was attended by Amin Al-Bakoush, Chairman of the Libyan Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and committee member, and Chairman of the Libyan Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The meeting discussed ways to enhance economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
Opening direct freight line between China and Misrata and Tripoli International Airports
Specifically, the Libyan government reported that the meeting also addressed:
- The possibility of opening a direct air freight line, in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, from China to Misrata Airport and Tripoli International Airport, after the latter’s completion.
- Facilitating visa procedures for Libyan citizens.
- Lifting Chinese customs tariffs on Libyan goods.
Holding of Libyan Chinese Economic Forum before end of year
The two sides also discussed ongoing preparations for holding a Libyan Chinese Economic Forum before the end of this year, which aims to expand cooperation and joint investment between the two countries.
