Brega Petroleum Marketing Company announced yesterday that a new expanded cylinder filling system will soon enable its Al-Hani Cooking Gas Cylinder Filling Depot to fill 25,000 domestic gas cylinders per day.
Brega said this is a qualitative addition that enhances the Depot’s capabilities and raises its efficiency in handling and providing cooking gas.
The project, it added, comes within the efforts of the Brega Marketing Company to develop its facilities and raise its operational efficiency,
As part of the field follow-up, the Director of the Maintenance Department, the Director of the Instant Filling Points Department, and the Gas Distributors visited the depot to see the latest stages of project implementation and its readiness for operation.
On-off gas cylinder supply problems since 2011
It will be recalled that since the 2011 revolution that ended the Qaddafi regime, there have been, on and off, gas cylinder shortages and spikes in their black-market prices in coastal cities.
This has improved markedly over the last two years as a result of the installation of multiple instant gas-filing depots across the country.
Nevertheless, there are still blackspots, including southern Libya where a gas cylinder, refilled in the north for LD 1.50 to LD 3.00, can retail for tens, and at times, hundreds of dinars.
A success for the Tripoli government
However, when listed alongside the other problems that the Tripoli government has been trying to resolve like: petrol and diesel shortages/price hikes, electricity cuts, water cuts, bread shortages/price hikes, the cash shortage and the rising black-market exchange rate of the dinar - the government seems to be slowly solving this problem.
