Tripoli based Libyan Prime Minister, Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba held a follow-up meeting yesterday to review the progress of the Tripoli International Airport and Airport Road development projects.
The meeting covered implementation stages and completion rates, as well as an assessment of remaining work and the necessary arrangements to finalize both projects.
Discussions focused on the projects' implementation progress and final completion phases, emphasizing the importance of coordination among relevant entities to ensure work is completed according to approved plans.
The Prime Minister stressed the necessity of maintaining quality and performance standards during execution and adhering to agreed-upon international specifications. He also called for close monitoring of the final completion stages to ensure both projects are finished to the required standard.
The meeting was attended by the Head of the Executive Team for the Prime Minister’s Initiatives and Strategic Projects, Mustafa Al-Mana; the Director General of the Transport Projects Implementation Agency, Mohamed Al-Majdoubi; the Chairman of the General Electricity Company of Libya, Bashir Al-Marash; the Company’s Deputy Chairman, Mounir Aft; the Director of Tripoli International Airport, Fathi Dalaoub; and representatives from the companies executing the projects.
No further details, including the exact opening date, were revealed.
However, it will be recalled that the Tripoli government’s Ministry of Transport inadvertently confirmed during a meeting that the opening date for the newly constructed Tripoli International Airport will be in ‘‘the fourth quarter of 2026’’.
The old Tripoli International Airport had been destroyed in militia fighting in the summer of 2014. The airport was initially being constructed by a consortium of Italian companies and was supposed to open in 2024.
It will be recalled that, despite several enquiries, the Tripoli authorities had refused over the last few months to confirm the opening date for Tripoli International Airport. They had also refused to provide an updated photograph of the construction of the airport.
Unauthorised personnel, including media, have been denied by a strict security cordon access to the airport’s construction site.
