EUBAM Libya reported today that, as part of its continued support to Libyan law enforcement agencies, it recently donated ten advanced handheld X-ray scanners, five each to the Narcotics and Psychotropic Drugs Control Agency and the Libyan Customs Authority.
These high-tech scanners, it stated, will enhance frontline capacity to detect illicit goods at border crossings, checkpoints, and remote areas.
EUBAM Libya experts will also provide targeted training on operational use, maintenance, and secure handling, ensuring officers are well-equipped to maximise the impact of this technology.
Brigadier Abd al-Hakim al-Hamrouni of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Drugs Control Agency remarked: “Thanks to our collaboration with EUBAM Libya, we’ve formed a specialised team of 15 officers and non-commissioned technical staff. Following their training, they’ll be deployed to key locations – Ghadames, Al-Qaryat, and Misrata. These scanners will streamline inspections, especially for commercial trucks, and reduce the burden on our officers.”
Brigadier Al-Taher Al-Mabrouk of the Libyan Customs Authority added: “We’ll be using the scanners for surprise inspections, especially in areas where fully unloading vehicles isn’t practical. They’ll help us inspect cargo like livestock feed quickly and effectively. Once our officers complete the training, we’ll begin operations along key routes from Misrata to Ghadames, covering roads, deserts, and border areas.”
This effort, EUBAM stated, strengthens Libya’s capacity to counter illicit trafficking and supports closer inter-agency coordination and more sustainable border management.
