Libya’s western based Border Guard Agency announced today that, as part of its 2026–2027 vision, the First Phase of the Western Border Security Project has been launched.
The agency reported that, in line with its vision to bolster border security—and in cooperation with the European Union Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM)—a field visit was conducted to the Al-Assah border security sector to oversee the implementation of the first phase of the Western Border Security Project.
The Al-Assah region is located in the northern Libyan-Tunisian border area.
Visual and thermal surveillance system utilizing modern cameras and technologies
The visit included an inspection of the installation of a visual and thermal surveillance system utilizing modern cameras and technologies. This system ensures round-the-clock monitoring of the border strip—day and night—while enhancing surveillance and early detection capabilities and raising the level of security readiness.
Covering approximately 200 kilometres of the border strip
The project covers approximately 200 kilometres of the border strip, aiming to upgrade the electronic surveillance system and support the Border Guard Agency’s efforts to protect the western borders and combat smuggling, illegal migration, and trans-border crime.
Turkish company implementing Hafter army's similar project in east
It will be recalled that on 20 July the Hafter-controlled eastern-based army announced that it had signed a contract with a Turkish company to implement an integrated project contract to manage and monitor 275 kms (in the first phase) of the Libya’s eastern border.
No further details were publicised.
There have been unconfirmed social media reports this week that the Turkish company has started implementation.
