The Attorney General’s Office reported yesterday that the Public Prosecutor is pursuing 228 municipal / local elections candidates for criminal incidents. Some of these candidates, it added, have been convicted whilst others still have pending cases.
The revelation came because of High National Elections Commission (HNEC) was routinely investigating the criminal status of 4,114 candidates standing for the municipal council elections through the Public Prosecutor’s database.
The types of crimes committed or allegedly committed, and the number of candidates were:
- Murder – 5
- Threat – 14
- Alcohol consumption – 9
- Intercourse and indecent assault – 3
- Damage to public funds – 8
- Abuse of authority -16
- Defamation and libel – 13
- Other misdemeanours – 123
- Weapon possession – 6
- Forgery of documents – 7
- Fighting – 9
- Illegal immigration – 1
- Theft – 7
- Drug use and trafficking – 5
- Kidnapping – 2
