Delegations from the Ministry of Local Government (MoLG) and the Municipality of Sidi Sayeh visited Tunis on 6-7 July to learn more about the latest in the management of big landfills and solid waste, Germany’s GIZ reported today.
During the Tunis visit, the participants discussed the challenges faced by the Municipality of Sidi Sayeh in managing solid waste and the environmental impact stemming from the landfill as well as possible solutions. The landfill at Sidi Sayeh is the biggest in Libya taking much of the waste for greater Tripoli.
The delegation visited different sites around Tunis, including the landfill in Zaghouan, a town approx. 60 km south of Tunis, to see the workflows in a similar landfill to Sidi Sayeh’s.
They also visited the transfer station and composting facilities in La Marsa north of Tunis where they had a fruitful exchange with the employees of the municipality. One of the topics of discussion was how to introduce composting in solid waste management. GIZ reported that the sites visits and discussions showed the delegations practical solutions that may be transferred to Libya.
The Tunis visit is supported by the European Union and Germany’s BMZ – funded programme ‘Decentralisation as a Contribution to Peacebuilding in Libya / Support to Municipalities (SML).’ It is implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the Libyan Ministry of Local Government and 30 partner municipalities.
