Benghazi, 22 May 2015:

Hostilities between the Zwaiya and Tebus in Kufra show no signs of abating a fortnight . . .[restrict]after the killings of two Zwai students by Tebus at the university campus just over a fortnight ago.

A Tebu man was killed and three others wounded today when the car they were travelling in was attacked just outside Kufra while heading to the small oasis village of Rebyana, some 150 kilometres away. The attack took place near what is known as the “Indian Company” – buildings that were once the premises of an Indian road construction company.

Members of the Zwaiya tribe are being blamed for what is seen as a reprisal for the killing yesterday evening in Kufra of a Zwai military man, shot by an unknown sniper as he was returning to his home in the ethnically mixed district of Al-Sweedia. Tebus are being blamed for that killing.

Low level but deadly violence between the two communities has continued in Kufra for more than three years despite several attempts by local elders and government officials to mediate a settlement.  A day after the university killing, two Tebus were killed in reprisal.

Yesterday’s and today’s violence is thought to be also linked to the killing in Ajdabiya two days ago of the commander of the pro-Islamist Ajdabiya Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council, Miloud Al-Zwai. A Tebu man is said to have been involved.

There is a roughly even split in Ajdabiya between members of the Zwaiya and Magharba tribes, unlike in Kufra where the Zwaiya are the majority. In Ajdabiya, in keeping with their now entrenched rivalry, the small Tebu community supports the Magharba. [/restrict]
