The Man-Made River (MMR) reported today a total power outage across the entire Eastern Region early this Saturday morning at 12:45 AM.

This comes after the Benghazi based ‘Ministry of Electricity’ had announced a total blackout from Misrata in the west to the Egyptian border.

The MMR said this outage cut off electricity to the wellfields in the Sarir and Tazerbo areas, as well as the water pumping station in Benghazi.

However, it said power was gradually restored starting at 8:00 AM today, with electricity returning to the Sarir wellfield. Three technical teams were immediately deployed to restart the field and bring the wells back online.

Operations are currently awaiting the restoration of power to the Tazerbo wellfield to resume full well operations.

Due to these emergency conditions, the MMR said it was compelled to reduce water supplies to certain cities and agricultural projects. This measure was taken to prevent the main system pipeline from draining and to build up sufficient water reserves in the Ajdabiya collection and balancing reservoir.

The MMR confirmed that the supply of standard water volumes to all cities will gradually resume once all wells are operational and water levels within the reservoirs return to normal.

The MMR stressed that the stoppage and deactivation of the wells resulted from the general power outage in the Eastern Region—a situation beyond the Authority's control or responsibility.

Power cuts hit 92 MMR water wells
It will be recalled that the MMR wellfield had experienced a power cut of 92 of its wells on 14 July.
