The Libyan Centre for Remote Sensing and Space Science (LCRSSS) announced last Tuesday (8 September) that its Gharian Seismology Centre is continuing its intensive field operations to select sites to install several temporary seismic monitoring stations.
The LCRSSS said this comes as part of a major national project to activate the National Seismic Monitoring Network in Libya.
This entails covering Libya’s coastal strip with 16 modern seismic monitoring stations in the first phase, including six stations in the eastern region: Benghazi, Zawiyat Msus, Al-Marj, Shahat, Derna, and Tobruk.
The LCRSSS said:
- A temporary station was installed at the Wadi Al-Qattara Dam on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
- On Saturday, September 5, 2026, a temporary station was installed at the Ghoat Al-Sultan Poultry and Cattle Project.
- On Monday, September 7, 2026, another temporary station was installed at the Educational Seismic Monitoring Station building within the University of Benghazi campus.
This step aims to evaluate the building and determine its quality and suitability for housing the educational monitoring equipment that the university plans to install in the future.
The LCRSSS said this fruitful collaboration exemplifies the genuine partnership between research and academic institutions in the service of the nation.
