Ways to strengthen the partnership with the US Embassy and the Comprehensive Medical Support Unit in developing the healthcare system, localizing treatment within Libya, and opening broader avenues for cooperation were discussed during a meeting yesterday between the US Embassy and the Head of the Department of Support and Development of Medical Services (DSDMS) and the Director of the Comprehensive Medical Support Unit at the US Embassy.
Holding a Libyan-American Health Forum
A coordination meeting was also held with the American side, attended by relevant departments within DSDMS, to enhance bilateral cooperation and coordinate the launch of the first Libyan-American Forum, scheduled to be held in Libya. The Forum aims to support the development of the healthcare sector and strengthen the partnership with the United States.
An MoU
Discussions included preparing a joint memorandum of understanding to establish a general protocol for healthcare work, thereby enhancing cooperation between the Libyan and American sides.
Training of Libyan cadres
The two sides discussed several strategic areas, most notably the training and development of medical and paramedical personnel and raising their efficiency through twinning programs, localizing treatment within the country, particularly for rare specialties and diseases, supporting specialized fields, introducing modern medical technologies, and developing medical management and operational systems for healthcare facilities according to modern models, especially in specialties requiring support.
Medical twinning programmes
Medical twinning programmes with American institutions were also discussed, along with bringing in visiting physicians specializing in subspecialties, implementing intensive training programmes for national staff, and opening avenues for cooperation with major American hospitals and medical centers. This included activating telemedicine services and coordinating joint visits to learn from American experiences and hospitals.
Formation of a joint committee
Both parties agreed to form a joint committee to oversee coordination and develop a clear plan for cooperation programmes. They also agreed to dispatch a specialized team to conduct a field assessment of several healthcare facilities and develop implementation mechanisms and proposals for management and operation based on best practices, thereby contributing to improving the quality of healthcare services and enhancing the efficiency of the healthcare system.
The DSDMS said this initiative aligns with the Prime Minister Aldabaiba’s vision of building effective partnerships that contribute to raising the level of healthcare services and enhancing the efficiency and quality of the healthcare system.
