The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed yesterday the recent release of a number of detainees, including some referred to in its previous statement on arbitrary arrests across the country.
UNSMIL confirmed that hundreds of people remain arbitrarily detained across Libya and called for their immediate release.
The Mission said it was also concerned about reports of the enforced disappearance of Mr. Mohamed El Gamaty and urges the competent authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and reveal his whereabouts.
The mission reminded all actors of the need to abide by the law and be held accountable for any human rights violations.
UNSMIL’S 22 March statement on arbitrary arrests
It will be recalled that in a statement released on 22 March, UNSMIL had expressed its alarmed by the wave of arbitrary arrest and detentions across Libya by law enforcement and security actors.
It said these actors are using their powers of arrest and detention to target individuals for their alleged political affiliations, to silence perceived dissent and to undermine judicial independence. These unlawful practices create a climate of fear, shrink civic space and erode the rule of law, it had added.
‘‘The Mission renews its call for the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained individuals and to hold those responsible accountable’’, the statement had concluded.
The HSC’s National Consensus Bloc and the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya It will also be recalled that on 27 March the National Consensus Bloc of the High State Council and the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya condemned the escalation of kidnappings, intimidation, enforced disappearances and security chaos in Tripoli.
They had called for the unconditional release of the kidnapped and called for measures to be taken to bring the perpetrators to justice.
