The Green Industry Centre at the Ministry of Industry and Minerals reviewed the most prominent statistics and indicators contained in the Engineering Report of Industrial and Environmental Indicators, which was prepared by the Centre based on the database of industrial facilities, including data on industrial activity, resource consumption, energy, and waste management.
According to the report:
Number of registered industrial establishments:
- 305 establishments
- 301 establishments belonging to the private sector, representing 98.7% of the total
- 4 establishments for the public sector at a rate of 1.3%
Employment:
- employing 26,034 workers
- 16,753 Libyan workers, representing 64.35%
- 9,281 foreign workers (35.65%).
Resource and energy consumption:
- Industrial facilities consume about 2,862 TWh of electricity,
- 41.48 million cubic meters of water
- 273.95 million litres of diesel
- 247 establishments used diesel
Environmental issues:
- 93 establishments have waste treatment systems, representing 30.5%
- 212 facilities, representing 69.5%, do not have waste treatment systems.
- 194 facilities had solid waste
- 42 facilities with liquid or gas waste without treatment. This reflects the need to strengthen environmental management systems within the industrial sector, the report said.
Report: a quantitative basis to develop industrial and environmental policies and plans
The report said these indicators provide a quantitative basis on which to develop industrial and environmental policies and plans, rationalize resource and energy consumption, improve waste management, and support the transition towards a more efficient and sustainable industry.
The Green Industry Centre pointed out that the report comes as part of its efforts to develop the database of the industrial sector and provide indicators that help the competent authorities understand the reality of industrial activity and set priorities in the fields of regulation, control and environmental sustainability.
