After announcing on 19 January of this year that it had obtained official approval to commence operations, after fulfilling all approved requirements, Sirte Gulf International Airport reported yesterday the arrival of its first official flight.
These would be the first flights since the airport suffered damage during Libya’s February 2011 revolution.
The maiden flight was an Embraer E190 operated by Buraq Air from Benghazi.
On the same day, a second flight departed from Sirte to Tripoli, reflecting the resumption of airport operations and strengthening air connectivity between Libyan cities, the airport stated.
With the commencement of flights, the Director of Sirte Gulf International Airport, Omran Faraj, announced the airport’s readiness to receive domestic flights to and from the airport to support air traffic and enhance connectivity between Libyan cities.
He said this is an invitation for airlines to coordinate with the administration to complete the organizational and administrative procedures.
He heralded the increase in the number of flights in the coming period, and also the preparations for the launch of international flights.
