The UNDP Libya Resident Representative, Sophie Kemkhadze, and the UNDP Team, met today with Adel Sultan, Libya’s Tripoli based Minister of Marine Wealth, at his Tripoli office.
During this meeting, leveraging Libya’s vast 1,900-km coastline to drive economic diversification and job creation, was discussed.
Kemkhadze highlighted the UNDP’s work in Libya and global expertise in sustainable blue economy initiatives, exploring ways to tap into marine resources for economic growth.
Minister Sultan reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening the maritime sector and welcomed collaboration with UNDP to ensure sustainable development that benefits Libya and its people.
The Ministry reported that the two sides discussed:
- Strengthening the cooperation programme between the Ministry of Marine Resources and the United Nations Development Programme in the fields of marine resources.
- Working on the implementation of a joint cooperation agreement that contributes to the development of the maritime sector and supports sustainable projects.
- Coordinating technical meetings between specialists from both sides to discuss ways of cooperation in training, project implementation and support for sustainable development.
- Empowering women and youth in various activities related to the fishing sector and enhancing their participation in the development of the sector.
The Minister also stressed the importance of cooperation with international partners to enhance the sustainability of marine wealth and develop work mechanisms in this vital sector in order to achieve national goals and keep pace with international strategies in the field of blue economy.
