Libya and Italy discussed areas of cooperation included in the draft fisheries sector Memorandum of Understanding to be signed between the two sides.
The discussions took place yesterday within the framework of bilateral relations between the two countries during a meeting between Adel Sultan, the Tripoli based Libyan Minister of Marine Resources, accompanied by the Director of the Ministry’s International Cooperation Office, at the Ministry’s Tripoli headquarters, and Gianluca Alberini, Italy’s Ambassador to Libya.
The Ambassador was accompanied by Fabio Giudice, Commercial Officer at the Embassy, and Nicola Giacalone, Director of Medina S.A. Medina S.A. is a company specialised in training and fishing activities. It has been helping Tunisia develop its fisheries sector since the 1990’s.
Discussions between the two sides focused on:
- Training, qualification, and capacity building programmes.
- Cooperation in the fields of scientific research and exchange of expertise.
- Supporting fish processing centres according to approved standards.
- Supporting marketing channels and facilitating access of Libyan seafood products to European markets in accordance with national legislation and international standards.
- Following up on the European Union Number for Libyan maritime exports.
- Holding the first Libyan Italian joint venture in the field of fisheries.
The Ministry reported that it was also agreed to continue communication between the specialized technical teams from both sides to ensure the optimal implementation of these channels.
It also affirmed that any cooperation is conducted exclusively within the framework of national laws and international obligations, and in a manner that preserves Libya’s national sovereignty.
