The Tripoli based Libyan Ministry of Economy and Trade reported yesterday the launch of the Blue Economy Strategy 2025 workshop under the slogan “Sustainability of Marine Resources for Comprehensive Development” in Tripoli from 9 to 10 September.
The themes of the first day of the workshop focused on reviewing the draft National Strategy for the Blue Economy 2025, which is being prepared and implemented by the relevant ministries and bodies in cooperation with the UNDP.
Within this draft strategy, promising investment opportunities in this sector, the importance of developing port infrastructure, and enhancing the role of the private sector in investing in fisheries and fish farming projects, were discussed.
The participants also stressed that the blue economy represents one of the most important future engines of the Libyan economy, as a pillar for economic diversification and reducing dependence on oil. It offers an opportunity to enhance food security, support innovation in the fields of marine renewable energy and coastal tourism, in addition to providing sustainable job opportunities in various coastal areas.
This workshop comes within the framework of the Libyan state’s efforts to develop a comprehensive national vision that invests more than 1,900 kilometres of Libyan coastlines rich in marine resources, and transforms them into a vital source of economic growth and sustainable development, in line with global trends in benefiting from the blue economy as a locomotive for comprehensive development.
The workshop was held with the participation of the President of the High State Council, Mohamed Takala, the Minister of Economy and Trade, Mohamed Al-Hwej, in addition to several ministers and undersecretaries of ministries in the Tripoli based government, in the presence of the President of UNDP Libya, a number of heads of accredited diplomatic missions, in addition to a group of academics, researchers and experts.
