Libya’s Department of Support and Development of Medical Services (DSDMS) reported yesterday that Libya has signs a contract with the UAE for gene therapy treatment of children with spinal muscular atrophy.
Ahmed Mlitan, the head of the DSDMS, signed the contract with the UAE’s Jalila Children’s Hospital to receive gene injections for patients with spinal muscular atrophy.
The DSDMS says the contract aims to provide the necessary care for 17 children suffering from this disease, with the necessary measures taken according to the competent scientific committee.
The contract came based on the recommendations of the scientific committees specialised in spinal muscular atrophy, which are tasked with evaluating treatment services, it added.
The DSDMS says the move comes in implementation of Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba’s decision No. 649 of 2024 and with the follow-up of the Attorney General’s Office regarding the provision of gene therapy for patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
