The Attorney General’s Office reported yesterday that its Deputy Public Prosecutor has ordered the detention of Acting Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdel Sadig – and his Office Director.

It reported that the Deputy Public Prosecutor at the Attorney General’s Office investigated the fact that the defendants ”deviated from the requirements of the job entrusted to them” and inferred that they had ”adopted behaviour incompatible with job duties”.

This, it continued, ”was represented in threatening the Corporate Accounting Officer to induce him to adopt a document authorising the disposal of € 457.6 million for the benefit of a foreign company in violation of legislation”.

As a result, the investigator detained the defendants – pending the case.‎

Abdel Sadig, it will be recalled, had replaced former Oil and Gas Minister Mohamed Aoun when Aoun was suspended by the Administrative Control Authority (ACA) on 25 March this year. Aldabaiba kept Abdel Sadig in his post despite Aoun being subsequently cleared by the ACA.
