Libya’s state National Oil Corporation (NOC) declared a state of force majeure on the Sharara oilfield effective Sunday 7th January 2024.
The force majeure, the NOC confirmed, was declared because of the oilfield’s closure by protesters.
The closure has resulted in the suspension of crude oil supplies from the field to Zawia terminal. The NOC reported that negotiations are ongoing to resume production as soon as possible.
Shortages of supplies
It will be recalled that protestors in the south of Libya are calling on the Libyan governments to provide them with services, including the supply of cooking gas cylinders and car fuel. Both of these are the object of smuggling and black-market prices making them either unavailable or available at exorbitant prices that are beyond the income of average citizens.
