Moscow has no plans to reopen its embassy in Libya, Russian deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov said today.
Speaking to Russian news agency Sputnik, Bogdanov, who is also President Putin’s Special Representative for the Middle East, said that security was the main reason. He also said that there are no Russia forces in Libyan and no plans to send any.
“To date, there is neither Russian military nor civilian presence in Libya. For now, we are not planning to restore it, including on security grounds. We are not even mentioning a military presence,” Sputnik quoted him saying.
Last month there were reports of Russian forces in Benghazi but these were unconfirmed.
The Russian Embassy in Tripoli was evacuated to Tunis after gunmen attacked it in October 2013.
