Tripoli, 15 May 2013:
Despite the recent unrest in Tripoli and Benghazi, the Deputy President of the GNC, Juma Ateega, said today that the country was not in danger.
“Libya is safe, despite the attempts made by these people who do not want the country to settle down,” Ateega told the Libya Herald.
Speaking on the fringes of a lecture about shared Libyan and Italian heritage, Ateega said that the General National Congress was giving attention to general security across the whole country. Benghazi was, he said, receiving particular attention at the moment, because of the city’s current “special circumstances”.
He also said that security in the south of the country was a priority.
“The south is like a safety catch for Libya,” Ateega explained, “because it is where many of the borders are. We need to put more focus on the southern borders, to secure the country.” [/restrict]
