London, 30 August 2020:

On Friday (28 August) the U.S. Department reiterated its support for Libyan peace efforts through the UN-led process. The statement came after a Berlin Libya Process meeting co-chaired by the U.S. with the UN.

In the resultant statement, the U.S. said ‘‘In yesterday’s (Thursday 27 August) Berlin Process meeting on Libya, co-chaired with the UN, the U.S. welcomed calls from Libyan Prime Minister Serraj and House of Representatives Speaker Saleh supporting a ceasefire and the resumption of oil production to address the pressing needs of Libyans.

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Joey Hood reiterated U.S. support for Libyan efforts to build on this momentum, via the UN-led process, to achieve a peaceful political solution that preserves Libyan sovereignty.

The U.S. stands with the Libyan people as they seek demilitarization, resumption of oil production that allow revenues to flow to all Libyans and a political resolution of the conflict.

We must all respect the Libyan people’s call for external parties to refrain from actions that could undermine a ceasefire and UN-facilitated political talks.’’
