The Attorney General’s Office announced today that the Public Prosecutor has ordered the pretrial detention of a former chairman of the board of directors of Libyan Airlines.

The Attorney General’s Office reported that the chairman manipulated the company's purpose to serve his own interests, using its operations as a tool to obtain benefits stemming from the embezzlement of five million dinars that the company received—under his supervision—from pilgrims during 2017 and 2018.

The Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office, within the jurisdiction of the Benghazi Court of Appeal, conducted an investigation which revealed that the accused had exercised illicit control by coercing pilgrims to pay him for their travel tickets in foreign currency, which he then appropriated for himself.

In a separate investigation, the review uncovered another instance of corruption: the accused had misappropriated thirty thousand dollars that he had collected from thirty-three pilots in exchange for enabling them to enrol in a specialized training course.

Consequently, the Public Prosecutor's Office ordered the accused's pretrial detention pending further investigation.
