Libya’s Brega Oil Marketing Company, a subsidiary of the state National Oil Corporation (NOC), announced yesterday that following the armed clashes that erupted in the early hours of yesterday morning in the vicinity of the Zawiya Oil Refinery, and the surrounding area, the Aviation Kerosene Tank 501 had suffered some damage.
Meanwhile, a ceasefire was secured yesterday through the intervention of tribal and social intermediaries.
Brega stated that the aviation kerosene tank number (501) sustained a direct hit from two shells, resulting in the rupture of its walls and the spillage of large quantities of kerosene in the vicinity of the depot.
Despite the ongoing clashes, maintenance and emergency teams entered the spill site to stop the leak and prevent the kerosene from reaching ignition sources.
After the ceasefire, Brega announced today that the fuel depot was operational again.
The ceasefire
Meanwhile, notables and sheikhs of the city of Zawia had intervened yesterday to secure a ceasefire.
An agreement was reached on the ceasefire and the deployment of the 52nd Brigade.
The fighting stopped before the afternoon in the northern region of Zawiya after the intervention of notables and sheikhs.
The northern region is densely populated and includes vital facilities, including the Zawia refinery.
There is no accurate official toll of the dead and wounded so far. The death of two cases was confirmed, occurring inside their homes, with the unconfirmed names of four other deaths circulating.
