The Libyan Export Development Authority (LEDA) discussed with the Libyan Iron and Steel Company (LISCO) the establishment of a fishing boat and trawler factory.
The discussions took place during a meeting held last Wednesday (22 April) between the Chairman of LEDA, Mohamed Al-Hangari, accompanied by the directors of the relevant departments within the Authority, and the Chairman of LISCO, Mohamed Al-Fagih, and several other LISCO officials, at LISCO’s Misrata headquarters.
The meeting discussed a feasibility study for establishing a national project to manufacture fishing vessels and trawlers. The project would be based at the Misrata Iron and Steel Plant, which would provide the raw materials and site.
Modernising and developing Libya’s fishing industry
According to LEDA’s vision, the project aims to strengthen and develop the fishing fleet, thereby contributing to increased production and the regulation of fish exports. It also aims to create new job opportunities, leading to regional development, and to modernize and develop the fishing industry by providing state-of-the-art equipment.
Diversifying the Libyan economy
LEDA said its primary objective with this project is to generate alternative revenue streams to oil, thereby supporting the Libyan economy. LEDA’s Chairman emphasized the importance of the Libyan Iron and Steel Company’s role, noting LEDA’s commitment to fruitful cooperation that leverages the company’s capabilities and infrastructure to implement national development and investment projects.
Following the meeting, LEDA’s chairman and his accompanying delegation toured LISCO’s commercial port and facilities, assessing its operational capabilities and logistical services and exploring their potential use in project implementation.
