The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reported yesterday that, in a step toward unifying Libya’s security institutions, representatives from military and security bodies across the country agreed on Tuesday on a location for the Joint Border Security Centre, which is scheduled to become operational within the next few weeks.
The Joint Border Security Communications and Information Sharing Centre is being overseen by the Joint Technical Coordination Team, established with the assistance of UNSMIL in January.
The team had previously established a similar information-sharing centre in Tripoli last April. The two centers will work together to facilitate information sharing and support unified responses to border security challenges.
Ali Khalkhal, UNSMIL’s Border Security Advisor, stated that “the establishment of the Joint Centre in Benghazi comes at a crucial moment, requiring support for unifying the military institution and building mutual trust.” He added that it “highlights how cooperation, dialogue, and joint technical planning can translate into tangible progress on the ground, thus advancing Libya’s path toward unified, effective, and secure border security management.”
