Libya exploring increasing exports to Turkey as part of its diversification policy – removing Turkish tariffs on Libyan products discussed

Libya discussed ways with Turkey of increasing Libyan exports to Turkey to contribute to achieving economic diversification. The discussions took place yesterday at the Libyan Consulate General in Istanbul.

The meeting was led by Shather Al-Sayed, Advisor to the Libyan Minister of Economy and Trade Mohamed Hwej, in the presence of the Libyan Consul General, Salah Al-Kaseh, the Commercial Attaché at the Consulate General in Istanbul, Omar Derhoub, the head of the Libyan Export Promotion Centre, Mohamed Al-Deeb, the Director of Investment in the Misrata Free Zone, Alaeddin Baba, the Chairman Misrata Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Fathi Al-Amin.

The meeting also included several Libyan companies participating in the F-Istanbul Food Fair with the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and several Turkish companies.

MoU to raise efficiency of Libyan products to export levels
The meeting also dealt with memorandums of understanding between the Libyan Standards Centre and the Turkish Standards Institute signed in 2009, which include raising the efficiency of the Libyan product in terms of packaging and transportation specifications to ensure their entry into the Turkish market and European markets.

Agreement to financing joint projects
The attendees also discussed the minutes of the agreement concluded between the Libyan and Turkish Ministers of Economy of 2009, which included economic cooperation in various fields, including financing joint projects.

Removing Turkish customs tariffs on Libyan products
Advisor Shather Al-Said emphasised the directives of the Minister of Economy and Trade on the need to prepare a proposal to remove Turkish customs tariffs on Libyan products in preparation for discussing with the Turkish Ministry of Trade since, the Economy Ministry reported, Turkish products enter Libya without customs tariffs.

Libya’s free zone and investment laws
Libya’s Law No. 9 of 2000 regarding free zones, transit trade, and investment opportunities in Misrata Free Zone, which provides advantages for foreign investors, was reviewed, as well as Law No. 9 of 2010 regarding encouraging investment.

Libya’s Commercial Attaché also referred to the facilitation of all procedures for Turkish companies to participate in exhibitions held in Libya and overcoming all the difficulties they face.
