Tunisia aims to export about 80,000 tons of fruit this year, compared to 39,000 tons in the last season – mainly to Libya.
The Acting General Director of the Tunisian Fruit Producers Association, Helmy Al-Qalai, was quoted speaking to local Tunisian media by the Supreme Council of Libyan Tunisian Businessmen (SCLTB).
He said the season for exporting pitted fruit started in April, “hoping to correct the results of the last season, which witnessed a remarkable decline in the exported quantities, especially towards Libya, which accounts for about 70 percent of Tunisian yields, due to the repercussions of the Coronavirus pandemic and the resulting closure of the land and air borders with this sister country’’.
Tunisia introduced a 10-day quarantine for arriving visitors through airports this week due to the rise in the number of Coronavirus cases. It has allowed Libyan visitors to cross the border by vehicles as long as they have a negative PCR test not older than 72 hours. This has allowed the flow of goods to continue across the border.
