Benghazi, 24 July 2017:
The Libyan Red Crescent has buried 41 unidentified bodies in Benghazi’s Hawari cemetery. They were found in the Sabri and the “12 buildings” complex is Ganfouda where militants were holed up earlier this year.
The Red Crescent said the bodies were originally moved to refrigerators in Benghazi Medical Centre.
The process to identify the bodies has already begun, with samples sent off to forensic scientists. The corpses were found in mass graves. It is unclear whether they belonged to militants, civilians or Libyan National Army soldiers.
Meanwhile, the Presidency Council’s government is negotiating with various countries over the repatriation of hundreds of so-called Islamic State (IS) fighter’s corpses.
They are currently held in Misrata and the fighters were killed in Sirte last year. Misratan security said they were from a number of countries, including Tunisia, Egypt and Sudan.
