Washington, 16 April 2015:
United States officials are urging a visiting delegation from the internationally-recognised Libyan House of Representatives . . .[restrict](HoR) to stick with the UN-brokered Dialogue process in Morocco and work toward the formation of a national unity government.
“We see our meetings with the House of Representatives officials as an important opportunity to reaffirm our support for the UN-led political dialogue talks,” said Acting Deputy Spokesperson for the US Department of State Jeff Rathke during a press briefing on Wenesday.
The delegation comprises key members of the House of Representatives, including Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Idris Abdullah Almaghrby; Defense and National Security Committee Chairman Fathallah Saaiti; Economic, Trade and Investment Committee Chairman Ali Khaled; Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Issa Al-Araibi and Finance and Planning Committee Chairman Omar Tantush.
The aim of the visit, organised by the Libyan embassy in Washignton, is to encourage the US to support the HoR as the democratically-elected and sole legitimate parliament, and the government it has appointed, in the battle against the growing threat from terrorists operating in the country.
In addition to talks with the State Department, Libyan diplomatic sources indicate that there will also be meetings at the White House, US Treasury, the Defense Department and with senior members of the US Congress. These will focus on Libya’s political situation, domestic security, fighting terrorism, the economy and how the US and the international community can support the democratically elected parliament and people of Libya.
