Tripoli, 30 January 2013:

UN ‘Libya in Transition’ exhibition in New York

A multimedia exhibition documenting the process of Libya’s change from dictatorship to democracy has opened at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

‘Libya in Transition’ features a mix of photographs, videos and text, documenting some of the country’s early challenges and achievements following the revolution.

These include compelling of the excitement surrounding the election of the General National Congress (GNC) in July.

“For most people, it was the first time they had ever participated in elections,” the UN said, “others had waited nearly a lifetime to vote again.”

The exhibition also portrays more current challenges that Libya is confronting, from  promoting human rights and increasing women’s participation in society to addressing security concerns.

Produced by the Tripoli-based United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), it features the work of UNSMIL photographer, Iason Athanasiadis. The United Nations Mine Action Service has also contributed pictures taken by photographer Giovanni Diffidenti.
