Benghazi, April 8
Voter registration for Benghazi’s local election began on Saturday morning. The registration is taking place in 131 centres and . . .[restrict]registration points in different neighbourhoods across the city.
It was announced in February that voters in Benghazi would go to the polls to later this month to elect 64 members of the local council, representing 11 electoral districts. However, not fixed date has yet been announced.
The head of Benghazi’s election commission, Professor Sulaiman Zubi, said that registration has been busy at all the centres. He noted that the commission’s work very much depended on young Libyans volunteers who, he said, were making great efforts to ensure the success of the electoral process in Benghazi.
He added that the electoral register was fundamental to the democratization process.
Zubi pointed out that the next phase, which will be announced in a few days’ time, would be the opening of nominations for people to stand as candidates.
He called on Benghazi residents to respond positively to the electoral process by going and registering for the vote.
