Misrata, 14 March 2014:

The new arrivals lounge at Misrata International Airport, with the capacity to welcome one million passengers . . .[restrict]a year, was unveiled this week.

The new lounge features two passport control desks, as well as four exits – two for nationals and two for non-nationals, to speed up the exit of passengers. There is also a foreign currency exchange in the lounge, to enable international customers to change money on arrival.

Two automatic baggage carousels mean that the airport can now deal with luggage from two flights at any one time. Improved security measures have been included in the design of the new lounge, including a number of baggage-checking devices.

The new arrivals lounge is the first stage of a project to upgrade and expand Misrata Airport. The next phase will be to carry out maintenance work on the present departure lounge, which will be refurbished and upgraded to the same standard as the newly-opened arrivals lounge.

The Aviation Authority agreed to the expansion work after receiving approval from the city’s Airbase College, which allocated an area of 610 hectares for the expansion of the airport.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Head of the Libyan Airports Authority and the Deputy Transport Minister, as well as members of Misrata Local Council and staff from the Turkish consulate.
