World Refugee Day is being celebrated for the second time in Libya. This morning hundreds of . . .[restrict]internal displaced and refugee children took part of the marathon in Furusiya organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for the Refugees.
The celebration will continue in the afternoon at the King’s Palace when the UNHCR is due to receive senior members of the Government and Congress. This will be followed by a reception at the palace, hosted by the Department of Antiquities in Tripoli.
During the ceremony attendees at training course on forced migration in Libya, held yesterday at the palace will be awarded certificates. The course, the first about refugees and internal displaced people in Libya, was organised by UNHCR and The Libya Initiative in cooperation with the University of Oxford’s Refugees Studies Centre and the University of Tripoli.
“Protection” was the key word in the speech by the UNHCR representative Samer Haddadin, who spoke about the organisation’s international mandate and the definition of the refuges and asylum seekers.
