Benghazi, 26 March 2013:
Benghazi was the scene of another assassination bid today, Tuesday, when an unknown assailant attempted to kill a . . .[restrict]senior member of the Thunderbolt special forces. The would-be killer shot up to 30 rounds from a Kalashnikov semi-automatic riffle at Colonel Khaled Oraibi outside his house the city’s Al-Kish district. He was injured in the legs and is now in hospital.
From the beginning of the revolution, Oraibi worked closely with Major-General Abdel Fattah Younis who was assassinated in July 2011. It is not known if the attempt on Oraibi is linked to the killing of Fattah Younis.
Benghazi had seen a lull in the spate of attacks against security officials over the year which resulted in over 20 of them being assassinated. However, four days ago a police vehicle was blown up in the city’s Hawari distict in a car-bomb attack and its two occupants injured.
