On Wednesday, the Department of Support and Development of Medical Services (DSDMS) reported that Since September this year it had supported 42 operations in Bani Walid General Hospital (18), Gharian Hospital (10), Khoms hospital (6), Tripoli University Hospital (6) and the Heart Hospital (Tripoli) (2).
The DSDMS said this comes within its strategy to localise treatment in Libya. These operations are conducted in cooperation with the respective hospital’s medical staff and under the supervision of the DSDMS which provided all the medical needs necessary to perform these operations.
It is part of a nationwide drive to improve the local provision of healthcare, saving the state huge overseas health costs and saving citizens the cost and inconvenience of seeking their healthcare abroad.
The 42 operations are only those supported by the DSDMS. They do not include operations conducted by various hospitals independently.
The DSDMS announced that it will, in cooperation with national cadres within public health centers and hospitals, continue to perform several surgical operations in the following medical specialties of heart surgery and implantation of knee and pelvic joints. Libyans are to apply for these free operations at the DSDMS’s listed subcommittees accompanied by the prerequired documents.
While to outside observers the number of these operations seems small, they are a very important indicator that reform efforts of Libya’s broken health system are going in the right direction.
