Germany’s GIZ Libya reported last Thursday (7 May) that a new phase of Municipal Waste Management Planning workshops has officially started (25 April and 14 May) for 15 municipalities at the Municipal Development and Decentralisation Support Centre (#MDDSC), in coordination and cooperation with the Tripoli based Libyan Ministry of Local Government.
GIZ said this step marks the continuation of a strategic process, focused on strengthening capacities and promoting sustainable planning practices.
The workshops bring together the participating municipalities in a practical effort to improve waste management systems at the local level it added.
This process is built on a shared understanding that improving waste management services cannot be achieved without:
– Strategic planning based on local data and municipal realities
– Building human capacities as a foundation for sustainability
– Participatory approaches that bring together different local stakeholders
GIZ said efforts have focused on:
– Strengthening the skills and technical capacities of staff from the Ministry of Local Government and partner municipalities as specialised experts in waste management
– Developing practical tools and methodologies for preparing and implementing municipal waste management plans
GIZ added that these trained experts will continue supporting municipalities through:
– Preparing integrated municipal waste management plans
– Ensuring plans are adapted to the local context of each municipality
– Supporting implementation and follow-up on the ground
“We, at the Ministry of Local Government, stand alongside these municipalities and continue providing technical support. We will not stop until municipalities across Libya are able to develop clear municipal plans that improve waste collection and transportation services, enhance environmental and public health conditions, and ultimately provide better services for residents.”, said Abu Algasim Al-Naas, Engineer at the Solid and Liquid Waste Department of the Ministry of Local Government and member of the Waste Management Specialist team.
This activity is part of the Support to Municipalities in Libya Programme (SML III), funded by the European Union in Libya and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government and 30 partner municipalities across Libya.
