The Italian Cabinet decided today to declare a state of emergency for “intervention abroad” for a period of six months. This decision will allow it to provide more aid to Libya. As a result, it announced that it has allocated € 5 million from its National Emergency Fund to Libya.

The decision was made because of the exceptional events that took place in Libyan when on 10 September Storm Daniel hit Libya’s eastern coast. This led to a an extremely dangerous situation for the safety of people and the safety of public and private assets, according to the Italian news agency Nova.

The decision comes based on a proposal from the Italian Minister of Civil Protection and Maritime Policy, Nello Musumeci, in the wake of the devastating Storm Daniel floods which left an unprecedented toll of dead and missing in the cities of eastern Libya, especially Derna.
